MTSI Huntsville supports Big Brothers Big Sisters Wet Dog Triathlon17th July 2010; Huntsville, AL![]() Saturday, July 17th, 2010, MTSI sponsored a team participating in the 11th Annual Wet Dog Triathlon in Decatur, AL. Over ten percent of MTSI's Huntsville workforce participated in the event to support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Morgan County. Individuals and relay teams completed a 400 meter swim course, a 15k bike course, and a 5k run course. This event encouraged and motivated everyone involved (even those cheering on participants) to live a healthier lifestyle. One employee lost nearly 100 pounds training for the event, another employee ran her first 5K, and another employee conquered his fear of swimming. One employee, Eric Broyles, placed first in the Male Clydesdale division. The well trained athletes assisted those who were less experienced and lunch time training events became a regular occurrence during the week. Everyone also worked hard on the weekend so they could boast their work out accomplishments with their co-workers on Mondays. Participant Karen Cole said "teamwork fuels common people to reach uncommon results. I am proud to work for a company that promotes and supports the teamwork that is essential in building business, friends, and a healthy environment". Successful Balloon Launch19th May 2010; Colorado Springs, CO![]() The MTSI Colorado Springs Office achieved a milestone with its first high altitude balloon launch on Sunday, 16 May 2010. The launch was the first in a series to create a Near Space Test Platform, part of the company's 2010 IRAD program. Doug Hine, Kathryn Weik, Robert Stemp and Justine Champine designed, built, integrated and tested the balloon payloads which ascended to 91,054 feet. The mission lasted 1 hour, 46 minutes and ended with a successful recovery of the payloads 35 miles from the launch point. The primary objective of this first launch was to validate the overall design concept which included the helium balloon filling and launch procedures, tracking the payloads with an on-board GPS system, and recovering the payloads after a parachute descent. Two payloads were flown which housed the GPS tracking system, video and still cameras, a thermal control system, environmental sensors (temperature, pressure, and relative humidity), an emergency locator beacon, and a strobe light. The team tracked the payloads in-flight with a pair of VHF radios receiving the GPS telemetry stream and displaying the location information on a moving map. The biggest surprise to the team was their ability to visually track the balloon with the naked eye right up until it reached its burst altitude. Note: These weather balloons expand from 8 feet in diameter at launch to 28 ft prior to burst. | ||||
